Who we are
Suggested text: Our website address is: https://jaredgoring.com.
Additions from the human: We – or, rather, I – am Jared Goring, a human person who thinks that some people might get some enjoyment or fulfilment out of interacting with my writing, my thoughts, and at the end of the day, me. That’s the only reason I have this site. Profit, control, data-gathering – none of these are my purpose here. Also, it’s just me, very literally, so there is no IT team, no mod team, no whatever… it’s all just me!
Comments
Suggested text: When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Additions from a human: You’ve been on the internet before, yes? Do continue to be aware that, much like anywhere else in the world, things you say and do will then exist to be reacted to as if you have said and done them (because you have). Comments can maybe be edited, retracted, deleted – but, someone else might’ve taken screenshots, they might be preserved in waybackmachine, or whatever else. If you think you might want to have not said something, maybe don’t say it?
Media
Suggested text: If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.
Additions from a human: Please be smart with media, like with comments. I can give my personal promise that I will not use any information for anything bad, but comments are broadly visible. If you post “sure am enjoying this sandwich from Sand and Wich Brothers Sandwich Co. at 2593 Sandy Wich Lane, S9D W2H, Sandlin Wyych, Saskatchewan, Canada, one block north and two blocks east of my home where I leave the front door unlocked every day from 2:00 pm to 3:45 pm as I take an exorbitantly long time enjoying a delicious sandwich”, then, well, somebody could take advantage of that information. Maybe don’t post that. Same goes for images with geotags or maybe even obvious landmarks (like the aforementioned Sand and Which Brothers Sandwich Co., which definitely does not exist). Of course you can post what you like, but just be cautious. People exist. They may see things. You will not get to control who sees a thing. Act accordingly.
Cookies
Suggested text: If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.
Additions from a human: Cookies are tasty, but this kind are just functional. I personally have not set any cookies with the goal of gathering personal info on you, but honestly I trust IPs and web servers about as far as I could throw what remains of the Titanic after I swam down there under my own power, which is to say emphatically “not”. The cookies are being saved. I have put a cookie policy on the website to try to communicate what I understand about the cookies on this site and what they do, but quite frankly we all know that the vague and amorphous “they” are gathering more information than they say they’re gathering. They get taken to court every couple of years for some egregious overstepping of boundaries, but it doesn’t really do anything. I, Jared, won’t knowingly and willingly abuse your cookies. I can’t promise anything beyond that.
Embedded content from other websites
Suggested text: Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Additions from a human: I don’t think I’ve embedded anything, and I’m not sure I’m likely to. I’d probably just direct traffic there instead, like it’s some sort of interconnected network of distinct sites on a web, some sort of internet of websites if you will (even though that sounds absurd to say that way, I know). If I do, though, I guess all your privacy flies out the window and belongs to whoever I’ve embedded from, which makes me all the less likely to embed anything. As with everything in our modern digital age, clicking is already too late. Fun.
Who we share your data with
Suggested text: If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.
Additions from a human: I won’t share your data with anyone if I can help it. I don’t even know what data I have. If someone asks me for a datum, I’ll stare at them blankly until they go away.
How long we retain your data
Suggested text: If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
Additions from a human: Comments are forever! The internet is forever! If you are doing something predicated on the idea that it will only last for a certain amount of time, you are probably doing things wrong, because all things are ostensibly permanent (even though they are also all ephemeral); time is unidirectional for us, and once something is done, it is done. Philosophy in privacy policy.
What rights you have over your data
Suggested text: If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Additions from a human: Please don’t ask me for this? I don’t know how to do it, and unless there is a big shiny red “Export Data on Dave Simmons, Blood Type AB+, Street Address 2240 Sandy Which Lane, Sandlinn Whyych, SK, Canada” button, I don’t think I’ll be able to do it.
I’ll try, obviously. I’ll delete everything about you I can find, at least.
Where your data is sent
Suggested text: Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
Additions from a human: We don’t have a spam service. I’m the spam service. Every post I have to delete 25 shorturls and half a dozen things that are supposed to look like crypto wallet transfers (because as we all know from our time on the internet, people often just leave money sitting out there for anyone who wants to grab it, with the password to access that money sitting right next to it) and there’s no spam service, it’s just me. The spam service costs money – and, honestly, in my opinion, might be the source of half the spam anyway. I can’t imagine the bitcoin things actually get anyone trying to cash them in, so there must be some purpose.
Anyway I don’t send your data to anyone. I don’t know what data I have, even. it’s just me, one bitch.
